A Ketchum Original Since 1971

The story of Bigwood.

From a valley-floor airstrip to the locals' favorite course — over fifty years of golf, families, and good days in Sun Valley.

How it started

1971 — a runway becomes a course.

Before Bigwood was a golf course, this stretch of valley floor was an airstrip — pilots landed directly on the grass to spend weekends in Ketchum and Sun Valley.

In 1971, the airstrip became Bigwood Golf Course, designed by renowned golf architect Robert Muir Graves. The course quickly became a fixture of summer life in Ketchum — walkable, scenic, and built for everyone from beginners to scratch players.

Decades of golf

The local's course.

For more than fifty years, Bigwood has been the after-work, after-school, after-anything course — a place defined by familiar faces and unfussy good times. A residential community grew up around the course through the 1980s and '90s, and the Thunder Spring development in the late '90s and early 2000s brought a new clubhouse to its current location, with room for a seasonal restaurant.

The Bigwood Grill served as the social hub of the course for over fifteen years, closing in 2022, and was known for its great food, the best patio in town, and as a true Ketchum gathering spot. Through every chapter, Bigwood has been a walkable 9-hole course with the best views in town.

A new chapter

2024 — building for the future.

In 2024, Bigwood changed hands and began a full revitalization. The first priority was the golf — golf course architect David Druzisky led a fall renovation that stayed true to the Graves original while adding a new irrigation system, rebuilt greens, reworked bunkering, and a layout that finishes at the clubhouse.

Timbers and Birdie's Snack Shack opened soon after — Timbers is the dinner-and-drinks restaurant at the clubhouse, and Birdie's is the on-course snack shack at Bigwood Commons, just steps from the #4 tees.
